Evolvability of untreated and treated populations.
For each treatment, we estimate evolvability as the number of rifampicin-resistant mutants in the population after 24 h of growth. The dashed black line represents the average evolvability of the untreated populations. Each point is a fully independent biological replicate comprising 24 replicate populations in which the number of rifampicin-resistant mutants is averaged. We performed an unpaired t test to estimate whether evolvability of treated populations is significantly different than this of untreated ones (** p < 0.01).
